English Garden, Munich

Gyßlingstraße, München, Bayern

Description

The English Garden (Englischer Garten) is a large (375 ha) inner-city park in Munich, extending from the northern boundary of the Old City until the north-eastern city limits. It was created in 1789 as agricultural grounds for the army when not in military duty and the name is in reference to the informal landscaping style (as opposed to the symmetrical design of the French style prevalent during the 17th century). The main sights include the Monopteros (a Greek temple), the 25m high Chinese Tower modelled on the "Great Pagoda" in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, the Kleinhesseloher Lake, the Japanese teahouse built at the occasion of the 1972 Olympics, the surfing wave on the Isar river, and countless bridges.

Access & Transport

Tram lines 16 and 27 run along the south-eastern section of the garden (Nationalmuseum/Haus d.Kunst and Paradiesstraße stations) and the U-Bahn lines U3 & U6 parallel to its western boundary, about 300-400m away, starting from Universität station until Studentenstadt station.

Instructions & Recommendations

We would suggest exploring the park as a break from the highlights of the city centre. Geographically, it is best combined with the Bavarian National Museum, The Munich Residenz & Hofgarten or one of the museums in Maxvorstadt. It is also an excellent option for runners looking for green spaces.

Meta review

The park is a favourite with tourists and residents alike. It gets high marks for its relaxing atmosphere, excellent upkeep and its biergartens with the surfers adding a touch of unexpected. The only mixed reviews are from those who visited late fall or in winter and the few who find the area too large so that the "sights" are too spread out.

Environmental & Social

Green activity. Socially, it has a marginally positive impact on the community through an improvement in quality of life (it is pleasant and healthy to have a park nearby)

Conclusion

Munich's English Garden is one of the best city-center park one could hope for: it is charming, large with various sights and well maintained. A luxury really considering that the surrounding Bavarian countryside is so easy to get to and dotted with beautiful lakes.
