Description
The Gärtnerplatz and Glockenbach neighbourhoods are nowadays considered trendy with their cafe, bars and artistic venues; it is a popular area for the city's LGBT community. Gärtnerplatzviertel is named after Friedrich von Gärtner, the architect to King Ludwig I in the early 19th century. It is located just to the south / south-east of the Old Town area and centred around Gärtnerplatz and the State Theatre building (Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz) built in the 1860's under King Ludwig II. Glockenbachviertel is named after the Glockenbach stream that now runs underground. It extends along the Isar river, southwest of Gärtnerplatzviertel. From a popular background housing Munich's Jewish community and millworkers, it has gentrified to become a sought-after residential area. Its main features are the Isar river and the St Maximilian Church along its bank.
Access & Transport
Fraunhoferstraße U-Bahn (U1, U2, U7, U8) and tram station (18, 27) is located exactly at the border between the two neighbourhoods and so is the Müllerstraße tram station (16, 27) which has lines running through Gärtnerplatzviertel. Isartor (S1 to S8, and trams 16, 27) at the north-eastern corner of Gärtnerplatzviertel and Sendlinger Tor (U1, U2, U3, U6, U7, U8 and trams 16, 17, 18, 27, 28) to the north of Glockenbachviertel are also good transport options.
Instructions & Recommendations
Those neighbourhoods have good nightlife spots and are interesting at any time of the day. We recommend combining a discovery of this area with a walk along the Isar river and visit of the Deutsches Museum on Museum Island (Museumsinsel).
Environmental & Social
Mix or urban environment with a green stretch along the river. Not overly commercial, with many independent stores, and culturally diverse.
Conclusion
The neighbourhoods offer a mix of residential and independent stores / cafes to the visitor that stand in contrast to the mainstream tourist highlights of the Old Town and Museum Quarter of Maxvorstadt. We would not consider it as a must see for somebody with less than 3 days in the city but, rather, an area to be enjoyed for those with more time and in a relaxed urban exploration mindset.
