Description
The Hofgarten (Court Garden) is located between the Residenz and the English Garden in the center of Munich. It was built in the early 17th century in the Italian Renaissance style with a pavilion for the goddess Diana at its center and eight paths radiating from it. It is flanked by the Residenz on the south side, the State Chancellery on the east side, and Odeon square on the western end. The arcades on the south and west sides shelter several wall paintings related to the regional Bavarian history.
Access & Transport
The garden is located just north of the Residenz and on the east side of Odeonsplatz and the namesake U-Bahn station (U3, U4, U5, U6). Nationaltheater tram station next to it (16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 29) is 350m to the south.
Instructions & Recommendations
The garden is actually small and a good place to enjoy a 30mins break. It is best combined with the Residenz Museum, Odeonsplatz and the Theatine Church, all within a couple of mins walk
Environmental & Social
Marginally positive from an environmental standpoint, on account of the green space and trees. Part of the city's architectural and artistic heritage
Conclusion
The Hofgarten is the perfect place to take a break before or after visiting the Residenz or some of the Old City churches and monuments. Not really a must see but, if you are in the area, it would be a shame not to spend 30mins of your time there and enjoy your surroundings.
