Lenbachhaus, Munich

33 Luisenstraße, München, Bayern

Description

The Lenbachhaus is an art museum containing artworks from Munich painters and contemporary artists. The highlight is a collection from artists belonging to The Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter) expressionist artists established in Munich in 1911 which included Wassily Kandinsky, August Macke, Gabriele Münter and Franz Marc among them. The museum is housed in a late 19th century Florentine-style villa (the former residence of Franz von Lenbach) and an expanded new wing designed by Norman Foster with a façade made of metal tubes.

Access & Transport

The museum is located at 33 Luisenstraße, in the Kunstareal (art district), a museum quarter in Munich's Maxvorstadt neighbourhood. Königsplatz (U2, U8) is a short 2mins walk away and there are a couple of bus stops there as well. Karlstraße (19, 20, 21, 29) is the closest tram station, only 300m from th museum. The closest parking space is the ZOB Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof.

Instructions & Recommendations

If you fancy, you can easily combine this activity with another museum visit in the museum quarter as they tend not to overlap in terms of content, perhaps for the Pinakothek der Moderne. Alternatively, the southern end of the English Garden is 1.6km / 20mins walk away.

Meta review

The museum isn't as well-known as some of the other cultural venues in the city but gets excellent reviews; the works from the Blaue Reiter group is a favourite and so is the Norman Foster golden copper wrapping of the old villa. Other positives include descriptions in both German and English and the more focused collections than in other institutions. The only real recurring negative comments relate to the unfriendliness of staff at the front desk.

Environmental & Social

Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Helps spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Lenbachhaus is a mid-size museum focused on German modern and contemporary art with major works from the Munich-based Blue Rider Group. Its human-sized collection can actually be perceived as a strength as it feels less overwhelming than in other venues. Our conclusion here is similar to the Pinakothek of the Modern: it is one of the best cultural activities for residents and tourists who have already taken in the Munich-specific architectural sights (squares and palaces)

Key positive

Successful blend of classic and modern architecture

Key negative

Enjoyment of modern art collections and exhibitions often comes down to personal preferences

Suitability

Best for adults and children aged 12 and above (younger kids may find it uninteresting) Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
