Munich Residenz Museum

1 Residenzstraße, München, Bayern

Description

Munich Residenz is the former royal palace of the Wittelsbach monarchs of Bavaria. From its origin as a castle at the end of the 14th century, it grew through multiple expansions to form a 130-room complex of buildings arranged around no less than 10 courtyards. The architectural style also evolved throughout the various artistic periods: Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicist and Historicist. Highlights include the Ancestral Gallery with over 100 portraits of the Wittelsbach family, the Treasury (separate fee applies) containing the dynastic jewels, the lavishly decorated 66m long Antiquarium hall and the Cuvilliés Theatre (separate fee).

Access & Transport

The building is at 1 Residenzstraße, you can't miss it. The fastest and easiest way to get there is by U-Bahn, Odeonsplatz station (U3, U4, U5, U6) is at the north-western corner of the Residence. Marientplatz station is also a good option, on the southern side (U3, U6 and S1 to S8) and so is Nationaltheater tram station next to it (16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 29). For those driving, there is no onsite parking and the closest option is the underground car park of the Nationaltheater (Max Joseph Platz).

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity is best combined with the Hofgarten, Theatine Church and Odeonsplatz, all within a couple of mins walk

Meta review

You will not find a guidebook of Munich that doesn't list the Residenz as a must-see and the online reviews support that position; visitors are astonished by the size and number of rooms, comparing it to Versailles in scale and commenting that it is good value for money. There are some visitors for whom rooms end up looking like each other, which the exception of the Antiquarium, so that it can become a little boring.

Environmental & Social

Some electricity to run the palace (lighting and heating) Preserves the city's cultural and architectural heritage

Conclusion

The Residenz is one of the city's highlights, whichever way you look at it: architecturally, historically, and artistically. Our recommendation is to visit but not try to cover all rooms; instead, focus on the highlights and then some to get a sense of the scale but stop when it starts to become repetitive. Do not neglect to check out the various courtyards and, if you have the time and inclination, the gorgeous Cuvillier Theatre.

Key positive

Some unforgettable rooms such as the Antiquarium and the Ancestral Gallery

Hyper-central location

Key negative

So many rooms end up diluting the experience

Suitability

Suitable for all ages but children under 12 are likely to find the visit boring quickly. There is access for wheelchair users, who must however be accompanied by supervisory staff (separate route).
