Olympic Park, Munich

21 Spiridon-Louis-Ring, München, Bayern

Description

The Olympic Park Munich (Olympiapark München) was built for the 1972 Summer Olympic Games taking place in the city and nowadays serve as a venue for cultural, religious and social events. It is located in the Oberwiesenfeld neighbourhood and includes a stadium, an aquatic center, the Aquatic Tower, a park that includes the Olympic Hill and Olympic Lake. On the other side of the ring road, there is also a shopping centre and the Olympic Village (in which the infamous 1972 massacre took place). The Olympic Tower is 291m in height and includes an observation platform at 190m.

Access & Transport

The station of Olympiazentrum (U3, U8) provides the easiest access on the northern side of the ring road and to the BMW Welt complex. Other convenient public transport options include the #27 tram line at Ackermannstraße or Gartenstraße stops, bus #144 at Spiridon-Louis-Ring on the southern side and the Olympiapark West tram stop (20, 21) to the southwest. For those driving there, there is a dedicated exit on the Georg Brauchle Ring and parking is available in the complex.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit there with the BMW Museum across the road.

Meta review

Reviewers state that Olympiapark is ideal for activities, have a bite / drink or just lay on the grass. There are positive comments about the views from the tower's observation deck as well. The only recurring (mildly) negative remark is that the complex is starting to show its age and is in need of modernisation

Environmental & Social

A good example of well used infrastructure (hundreds of events take place every year at various venues inside) with plenty of green space that can be enjoyed by the community / the taxpayer + creates jobs. Of course, few of those events are carbon neutral...

Conclusion

Few cities have held the Olympic Games and this is one of the best examples of infrastructure that has remained used by the city and its residents. The park is a pleasant area and many activities are on offer - not a must do for those short on time in Munich but an enjoyable half day option.
