Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich

40 Barer Straße, München, Bayern

Description

The Pinakothek der Moderne is one of the world's largest modern and contemporary art museums. The building design features the use of glass, white and grey concrete, a rectilinear facade and a central domed rotunda connecting the 4 sections of the museum: Art, Architecture, Design and Works on Paper. The modern art collection covers modernist and contemporary artists such as Miro, Braque, Dali and Warhol whilst the design collection includes over 70,000 industrial and graphic design objects. The collection of works on paper contains both 19-21st centuries work (e.g. Cézanne, Matisse) and Renaissance pieces from the likes of Dürer, Rembrandt and Michelangelo. Finally, the architecture collection includes photographs, blueprints and drawings from the likes of Le Corbusier, de Cuvilliés and Neumann.

Access & Transport

The museum is at 40 Barer Str. in the Kunstareal (art district), a museum quarter in Munich's Maxvorstadt neighbourhood. Pinatotheken tram station (27, 28) is next to the western side. The closest U-bahn stations are Theresienstraße (800m - U2, U8), Königsplatz (900m - U2, U8), Odeonsplatz (1.0km - U3, U4, U5, U6) and Universität (1.0km - U3, U6) The building has barrier-free access from Barer Strasse; alternative access from Gabelsbergerstrasse / corner Türkenstrasse.

Instructions & Recommendations

If you fancy it, you can easily combine this activity with another museum visit in the museum quarter as they tend not to overlap in terms of content (except Lenbachhaus and Pinakothek der Moderne somewhat). Alternatively, the southern end of the English Garden is 1.5km / 20mins walk away.

Meta review

Visitors enjoy the variety of items on display which is not limited to modern and abstract paintings. There are also many positive comments about the in-house cafe and the 1 euro ticket price on Sundays. There are a few mixed reviews from those who don't really enjoy contemporary art and, accordingly, find the museum a little boring + some recurring comments about front desk staff being rude.

Environmental & Social

Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Helps spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Pinakothek of the Modern houses extensive collections spanning different art types, medium and periods which makes its appeal uniquely wide for a modern art museum. Whilst few of the items would be dubbed masterpieces, we think it is one of the best cultural activities for residents and tourists who have already taken in the Munich-specific architectural sights (squares and palaces).
