St Peter's Church, Munich

1 Rindermarkt, München, Bayern

Description

St Peter's Church (Peterskirche) is Munich's oldest church. The original church was built in the 12th century, around the same time as the founding of the city, but it was destroyed by a fire and replaced by an expanded version in Gothic style. It is best known for its 91m tower nicknamed Alter Peter (Old Pete), its high altar with the lavish sculpture of St Peter and several paintings. It is possible to climb 300 stairs to the viewing platform at 56m for which an entrance fee applies.

Access & Transport

The church is located in the Old City, at 1 Rindermarkt, just to the south of Marienplatz. The Marienplatz U-Bahn / S-Bahn station (U3, U6 and S1 to S8) is directly across the square and the Marienplatz tram stop (12, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 29) on Theatinerstraße is 400m to the north.

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity is best combined with Viktualienmarkt (2mins to the south), Marienplatz and Frauenkirche.

Meta review

The church is well covered by guidebooks and online travel blogs; visitors mostly write about the views from the top which provides great perspectives of Marienplatz and Frauenkirsche but crowding seems to be an issue (in the tower). Reviewers also underscore the peaceful atmosphere and the impressive high altar.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. The building is part of the city's architectural and cultural heritage and the tower entrance fees contribute to its upkeep.

Conclusion

Peterskirsche has a distinctive profile with its Alter Peter tower but it is its interior that really makes it stand out alongside its deep routed history that goes back to the foundation of the city of Munich. That being said, there is nothing truly spectacular to wow tourists without much inclination for religious art - if that is your case, then our recommendation is to take a look if you are in the area but don't plan your itinerary around it.

Suitable for all ages but best for those aged 12 and above to appreciate the architecture and decoration. The cathedral is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility, except for the tower.
