Description
The Theatine Church (full name is Theatinerkirche St. Kajetan) is a Catholic church located on Odeonsplatz in Munich and dedicated to St Cajetan, the founder of the Theatines order. The Church was built in Italian High-Baroque style between 1663 and 1690; it has two 66m high towers that were added a few years later, a dome 18m in diameter and a Rococo facade designed by François de Cuvilliés in 1768. Nowadays, it is still a Dominican monastery. Highlights inside the church include three organs, the crypt where over a dozen member of the Bavarian royal family were buried, and the yellow colour of the building.
Access & Transport
The garden is located just west of the Residenz on Odeonsplatz. The namesake U-Bahn station (U3, U4, U5, U6) is just across the square. Nationaltheater tram station next to it (16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 29) is 300m to the south.
Instructions & Recommendations
This activity is best combined with the Residenz Museum, Odeonsplatz and the Hofgarten, all within a couple of mins walk
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Historic building that is part of the city's architectural heritage.
Conclusion
The Theatine church manages to stand out among the several churches worthy of a visitor's interest and time in Munich's old city neighbourhood. Its unique profile and colour scheme is arresting and invite passersby to take a look inside. In any case, travellers are very likely to be in that part of the city to check out other attractions but, if not, we recommend making the short detour there.
