Viktualienmarkt, Munich

3 Viktualienmarkt, München, Bayern

Description

The Viktualienmarkt is a farmer's market selling varied produces such as fruits, meat, cheese, fish, wine and flowers. It is located 300m south of Marienplatz which was the main town marketplace until this market was created by decree in the early 19th century. The market is operated by Munich Markets, a municipal company and is open Monday to Saturday.

Access & Transport

The market is 200m south of St Peter's Church and 300m south of Marienplatz with its U-Bahn / S-Bahn station (U3, U6 and S1 to S8). The Reichenbach tram station (250m to the south) also provides an alternative public transport option alongside a few bus services on Prälat Zistl Str. For parking options refer to this page: https://www.viktualienmarkt-muenchen.de/parken/

Instructions & Recommendations

Unless you are grocery shopping, we would suggest planning to have lunch next to the market (there is a beer garden and some cafés and restaurants in the Schrannenhalle next to the market) and visiting either just before or after. Geographically, it combines well with St Peter's Church and Marienplatz as well as Asamkirche and a visit of the Gärtnerplatz & Glockenbach neighbourhoods

Meta review

The market is extremely popular, with tourists mostly apparently. Visitors enjoy the wide array of goods, including sandwiches with Bavarian sausage, some local dishes and beer from the beer garden. The main criticisms are, unsurprisingly, that it is too tourist oriented and expensive.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally and socially neutral as we have no information on most producers farming and production methods. The pricing is a negative community-wise.

Conclusion

The Viktualienmarkt has move up the value chain from an everyman's daily market to a more gourmet proposition. This is fine for tourists who will enjoy the quality of produces and visually inviting stalls, but it can alienate local residents looking for an affordable farmer's market they can shop at every week.
