Catedral de Murcia

s/n Plaza del Cardenal Belluga, Murcia, Región de Murcia

Description

The Cathedral of Murcia (Iglesia Catedral de Santa María en Murcia) is a Catholic church built in the 15th century with an interior that is mainly in Gothic style and a Baroque façade. Inside, there are 3 naves and 23 chapels - the best known is the Vélez Chapel with its cupola of stars. The bell tower is the tallest campanile in Spain, reaching 95m with the weathervane. It took 270 years to complete so the artistic style changes as one moves up, from Renaissance at the bottom through to Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical. Visitors can tour the church, discover a museum and, for an extra fee, take a guided tour of the bell tower.

Access & Transport

The Cathedral is in the center of the city, on Plaza del Cardenal Belluga. There are buses stopping on Gran Via and C. Isidoro de la Cierva (100m at the back). It is a 15mins walk (1.2km) to the train station. Murcia is 230km south Valencia, 85km from Alicante and 150km southeast of Albacete.

Instructions & Recommendations

Guided tours are conducted in Spanish with brochures in different languages for the guided tour to the Tower.

Meta review

Considered as one of the top attractions in Murcia, the façade is qualified as one of the best among Spain's cathedrals whilst the interior is described as well decorated, in particular the impressive Velez Chapel. Positive comments about the plaza on which it is located and some grumbling about the price for a religious edifice.

Environmental & Social

The ongoing environmental footprint is low. Helps maintain the town's cultural and architectural heritages

Conclusion

The cathedral is one of the city's landmarks and those interested in architecture and religious art or history will enjoy taking a tour (audio or guided). For the others, coffee on the plaza marvelling at the Baroque facade and a quick walk around might just do.
