Museo Foro Romano, Cartagena - by Management
Description
Cartagena was founded in the 3rd century BC by settlers from the 'original' Carthage, in modern day Tunisia. It was the capital of a large province during the Roman period and many contemporaneous ruins have been excavated, including that of the Roman Forum Quarter that can be seen in the namesake museum. The main structures are a thermal establishment (Roman baths), an Atrium (identified as the seat of a collegium), a shrine of the Egyptian goddess Isis, and the Curia (local senate).
Access & Transport
The museum is located along Honda and Adarve streets in the middle off the old town of Cartagena. Bus 9 stops nearby on C. Serrata and it is exactly 1km (15mins walk) to the train station. The closest cities are Murcia, 50km to the northeast and Alicante, 120km to the north.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest starting with the visit of this museum, then the Roman Theatre followed by the National Museum of Subaquatic Archaeology.
Environmental & Social
Some electricity consumption (lighting and heating/cooling) The museum helps preserve the city's cultural and architectural heritage and educate visitors.
Conclusion
The Roman Forum Museum is a recommended visit for anybody travelling to Cartagena (Spain) with an interest in archaeology. We think it is complementary rather than overlapping with the Roman Theatre.
