National Museum of Subaquatic Archaeology

22 Paseo Alfonso XII, Cartagena, Región de Murcia

Description

The National Museum of Underwater Archaeology is located in the city of Cartagena in the Region of Murcia. The centrepieces are the remains of Mazarrón I and the reconstruction of the Mazarrón II (protected under the waters), two Phoenician ships from the 7th century BC. Other exhibits include cargo and explanations around the use of amphora. The building was designed by architect Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra on the Alfonso XII pier.

Access & Transport

The museum is located next to the port, at the southern edge of Cartagena, on Paseo Alfonso XII. Bus 8 and 9 stop almost next to it. The closest cities are Murcia, 50km to the northeast and Alicante, 120km to the north. Accessibility info: https://www.culturaydeporte.gob.es/mnarqua/visita/accesibilidad.html

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest starting with a visit of the Museo Foro Romano, then the Roman Theatre followed by this museum.

Meta review

Not a well-known attraction and sometimes missing from the travel guides and bloggers shortlist but online reviews are genuinely excellent. Visitors enjoy both the interactive aspects and educational content relating to the maritime technology of the ancient cultures (Phoenician, Greek, Roman) and that of underwater ship salvaging and archaeology.

Environmental & Social

Minor environmental footprint with some positive initiatives such as the use of LED lighting. Educational value and helps preserve the region's history and archaeological heritage.

Conclusion

A very well thought-out and executed museum with a slightly unusual and technical topic that is conveyed to visitors in an engaging fashion. The artefacts by themselves aren't unique in any way but the 'packaging' deserves some praise. Recommended for anybody with a cultural inclination.
