Corison Winery tasting, Napa Valley

987 Saint Helena Highway, St. Helena, California

Description

Corison Winery is located in the Napa Valley, California and is best known for the quality of its Cabernet Sauvignon. It was founded in St Helena in 1987 by Cathy Corison, the first female winemaker in the area. The winery offers wine tasting most days of the year by appointment. The one reviewed here is the 'Library Tasting' and includes a tour with tasting of four single-vineyard Cabernets. Details on current flight here: https://www.corison.com/shop/?view=reservationtimes&slug=Library_Tasting

Access & Transport

Address: 987 St. Helena Highway, St. Helena, CA 94574-2267 The winery is 25km north of Napa, 12km north of Yountville and 2km south from the center of St Helena.

Instructions & Recommendations

Online appointments are required ahead of time. The winery is unable to accommodate children (<21) and pets The fee will be waived with the purchase of 4 bottles of Cabernet per tasting, or upon wine club enrolment

Meta review

Not the most visited winery in the area by any stretch but specialized magazines and online reviews are both very complimentary. Visitors enjoy the intimate atmosphere, excellent wine quality and the interesting story of the winemaker and vineyard. A lot of positive comments about the quality of the staff, the absence of pressure to purchase bottles and a large number of returning visitors mention that 'the wine tastings have grown in scope as Cathy has acquired grapes / additional property'.

Environmental & Social

The vineyard mostly uses organic grapes and the tasting is environmentally neutral. Socially, the cultural aspect (discovery of the terroir and wine making culture of Napa & Sonoma valleys) evens out the alcohol element.

Conclusion

This is a very non-commercial alternative to some of the larger wineries in Napa or Sonoma, but it comes at a price (likely partially offset by some purchase) so we think it is best recommended to (red) wine enthusiasts.

Key positive

Excellent quality wines on tasting flight

Intimate atmosphere

Key negative

Not a cheap tasting so best for wine connoisseurs

Suitability

For adults only as this is an active winery. It is not explicitly stated but we think visitors with reduced mobility should be able to enjoy a visit and tasting.
