Description
The Bardenas Reales is a desert-like area (or badlands) of southern Navarra, where the soil has been eroded by wind and water creating unusual shapes with plateaux and canyons with reddish hues. The two main areas are the White Bardena (central and more desertic) characterized by extensive plains and deep gorges, and the Black Bardena (south-east) marked by plateaux cut by rivers.
Access & Transport
The Bardenas are close to the town of Tudela, in the south-eastern corner of Navarra, close to the border with Aragon, 90km south of Pamplona and the same distance northwest of Zaragoza. Entrance is from the municipality of Arguedas
Instructions & Recommendations
There is a free interpretative center in Arguedas that can provide a simple map and directions. Do not forget to bring water as there isn't any fresh water point inside.
Environmental & Social
Green attraction except for the transport involved.
Conclusion
The Bárdenas Reales offer some incredible and unexpected landscapes that warrant a detour for any visitor in the Zaragoza or Pamplona area. If visiting in the summer, try to avoid the hottest hours of the day (the morning and evening light is better anyways)
