Foz de Arbayún

Calle Iso, Iso, Navarra

Description

Foz de Arbayún is a 6km-long canyon, at times nearly 400m deep excavated by the Salazar River in the limestone rock of the Sierra de Leyre in eastern Navarra. The area is a natural reserve hosting a large population of vultures and eagles.

Access & Transport

The canyon is 50km east of Pamplona, off the NA-178 between Lumbier and Navascués. There are parking spaces at the Mirador de Iso.

Instructions & Recommendations

The most accessible point of view is from "Mirador de Iso". Foz de Lumbier, another canyon, is only a 20mins drive away.

Meta review

The canyon is often listed alongside that of Lumbier in regional travel guides and the views from the Mirador de Iso get excellent comments. Few seem to take a walk in the area though. Recurring recommendations to bring binoculars to observe the vultures circling overhead.

Environmental & Social

Green attraction with minimal human footprint

Conclusion

The Gorges of Arbayún are a feast for the eyes and deserve to be explored more than a few minutes from a fixed viewpoint. A highly recommended stop for road trippers exploring Navarra.
