American Museum of Natural History, NYC

200 Central Park West, New York, New York

Description

The American Museum of Natural History is a vast museum complex stretching over several buildings and 45 permanent exhibition halls in NYC's Upper West Side. The original Victorian Gothic building was designed in the 1870s to complement the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the opposite side of Central Park. The collections encompass specimens of plants and animals, minerals and meteorites, fossils and human cultural artefacts. Highlights include dinosaur skeletons and that of the famous 'Lucy', Moai sculptures from Easter Island (Rapa Nui), the Hall of African Mammal and the Hall of North American Forests.

Access & Transport

The complex is on the western side of Central Park, framed by Columbus Ave and Central Park West, between 77th and 81st streets. The 81st Street/Museum of Natural History (A, B, C) is next to the building (but is not wheelchair accessible). M7, M11 and M10 buses also stop there. Meta review

A favourite among NYC cultural activities with excellent online reviews. The most recurring comment is that the complex is huge and the collections can't all be covered in one visit - expect to spend nearly half a day but you'll need to be selective or zip through some sections. The main drawback is queuing at the entrance for those who have not booked online but adults and children alike will be rewarded with some fantastic exhibits. Among online reviewers' favourites are the blue whale, gemstones, dioramas and, of course, the dinosaurs.

Environmental & Social

Educational value. Though the buildings are old, the institution has been making efforts toward sustainability over the last two decades: electricity and steam consumption, waste reduction and sourcing of sustainable food. Info here: American Museum of Natural History, NYC

Conclusion

Without doubt one of the best cultural choices for families in NYC and probably a welcome change from art museums for some. There are enough halls and themes to keep anybody's interest alive and those keen on sciences and the natural world may consider scheduling a 2-part visit.
