Bronx Zoo - by Jose Ortiz on Google
Description
The Bronx Zoo opened in 1899 with buildings in Beaux-Arts design and is today the largest metropolitan zoo in the USA. It is affiliated with other zoos managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) within New York. There are currently over 4,000 animals from 650 species spread across sections such as (inter alia) Birds of Prey, African Plains, Baboon reserve, Madagascar, the Sea Lion Pool, and Tiger Mountain.
Access & Transport
The zoological garden is in the southern part of Bronx Park By public transport, take line 2 or 5 to Pelham Parkway and walk or the BxM11 express bus from Manhattan (leaving from madison Ave between 26th and 99th Streets, then travels directly to the Zoo's Bronx River entrance). Car all-day parking is $20 More info on how to get there: https://bronxzoo.com/plan-your-visit/getting-here/transit Accessibility info: https://bronxzoo.com/plan-your-visit/accessibility
Instructions & Recommendations
All visitors must have a date-specific ticket. Limited Admission tickets are for park entry only and are $26.95 (ages 13+) and $18.95 (ages 3-12 yrs.); they do not include any "Star Attractions".
Environmental & Social
WCS has some research/education aspects and is involved in conservation projects such as the Makira National Park in Madagascar and in Melanesia (Oceania). This partially compensates for the ethical aspect of keeping animals in captivity.
Conclusion
The Bronx Zoo is arguably one of the best family activities in NYC but isn't great value for most travellers and residents, in our opinion. An option to consider for those tired of the museum and skyscrapers with 5 days or more in the city.
Key positive
Large, with good diversity of animal species
Excellent family activity
Key negative
Very expensive
The concept of zoos is debatable
Suitability
Suitable for all ages and accessible for visitors with reduced mobility.
