Brooklyn Bridge - by Irakli Samushia on Google
Description
The Brooklyn Bridge is one of New York's most recognizable landmarks, linking the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn nearly 40m above the East River since 1883. Unusually, the bridge uses hybrid cable-stayed and suspension engineering techniques; it has a total length of over 1,800m, a span of nearly 500m and towers with height of 83m. The bridge possesses a pedestrian promenade + bike lanes, 18m above the automobile lanes.
Access & Transport
From Brooklyn side, pedestrian access is via a staircase near Prospect Street (between Cadman Plaza East and West) or further away from Tillary St. The High St (A, C) and Clark St (2, 3) underground stations are both within a few mins' walk. From Downtown Manhattan, through a staircase along Park Row or from nearby Centre St. where Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall (4, 5, 6) and Chambers St (J, Z) stations are located.
Instructions & Recommendations
Best to select a sunny day and when it is not too windy. This activity is best combined with a discovery of Brooklyn Height & Promenade, and Tribeca or Chinatown (Manhattan).
Environmental & Social
Visitors don't really add to the carbon footprint. Part of the city's architectural heritage
Conclusion
One of our favourite activities in NYC, perfect on a crisp but windless sunny winter day to start a day of exploration in Brooklyn. Some of the best NYC skyline views in the city and a great way to get some exercise in.
