Description
Grand Central Terminal is the southern terminus of several commuter lines in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Its architecture in Beaux-Arts style makes it a tourist attraction and the Main Concourse is a (very) regular feature in movies. There are also upscale bars and restaurants (e.g. the Oyster Bar and Campbell Bar) and a fresh produce market. Highlights include the ceiling of the Main Concourse featuring 12 constellations painted in gold leaf plus 2500 stars, the opal glass clock above the Information Booth, the Whispering Gallery, the Tiffany Clock on the main entrance façade, and the Vanderbilt Hall with its chandeliers.
Access & Transport
Located at 42nd Street and Park Avenue. It is connected to Grand Central–42nd Street station (4, 5, 6, 7).
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with The Morgan Library & Museum and/or the New York Public Library & Bryant Park.
Environmental & Social
Very urban environment but no incremental carbon footprint from visitors (as opposed to commuters). An architectural landmark of the city.
Conclusion
An architectural gem best appreciated with a guide or in-depth guidebook. Not the most impressive station you will ever see but still a worthy stop.
