Greenwich Village, NYC

Christopher Street, New York, New York

Description

Greenwich Village is one of New York's best-known neighbourhoods; during the second half of the 20th century, it became the 'bohemian' area of Manhattan with its artists, cultural movements (LGBT, Beat) and large student population (NYU is there). It is located southwest of the Flatiron building, south of Chelsea and north of SoHo, and is large enough to comprise of sub-neighbourhoods such as West Village and the Meat-Packing District. Besides Washington Square Park, the attractions are various buildings (for their architecture), art galleries, live performance venues, and restaurants.

Access & Transport

Plenty of underground stations serving the area, including the various 14th St stations. Those located at the heart of the neighbourhood are Christopher St (1, 2, PATH orange and blue), 9 St (PATH orange and blue) and W 4 St - Wash Sq (A, B, C, D, E, F, M)

Instructions & Recommendations

The Chelsea Market and Whitney Museum of American Art are in the north-western corner of Greenwich Village (or just across W 14th St in Chelsea), near the Hudson River.

Meta review

A mainstay of travel magazine targeting the hip crowds, the neighbourhood gets excellent online reviews (mostly) on account of being different, more human sized. It is described as a place to 'watch' ordinary life and enjoy cafes and restaurants - reminiscent of some of London or other European capital neighbourhoods, which prompts those on a tight schedule to state that this is not the place for those looking to check out the highlights of NYC.

Environmental & Social

It is an urban environment with high rises (no skyscrapers), patches of green and some trees. The flow of visitors gives some vibrancy and allow independent boutiques, artists and restaurateurs to operate.

Conclusion

Greenwich Village is arguable one of the most pleasant neighbourhoods to wander in, colourful with independent boutique, cafes and that artsy vibe which it maintains precisely because it packs no major tourist venue. Best reserved for urban explorers and those who have ample time to spend in the city (incl. NYC residents of course)
