Description
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum consists of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid and several other military and civil aircraft and ships, many of which are displayed on the carrier's deck. Highlights include the submarine USS Growler, a Concorde, the Space Shuttle Enterprise and a Lockheed A-12 supersonic reconnaissance plane.
Access & Transport
The museum is at Pier 86, along the Hudson River, north of the Hudson Yards and west of the Hell's Kitchen neighbourhood. The M12 and M50 buses stop on 12th Ave. next to it and the Midtown / W. 39th St. ferry pier is less than 5mins away. The closest metro stations are 50 St (A, C, E) and '42 St - Port Authority Bus Terminal' (A ,C, E), both 1km / 15mins away.
Instructions & Recommendations
Avanced online bookings (timed entry) are recommended All guests under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult for entry into the Museum.
Environmental & Social
Repurposing of a ship so quite neutral from an environmental perspective (as long as it does not move and aircraft don't fly). Helps preserve a "technical heritage".
Conclusion
If you are a fan of military ships and aircraft, then we strongly recommend a visit there. Otherwise, we think value is debatable and that the 'curation' and experience could be much improved with more info and less focus on the commercial aspects.
Key positive
Several visually extremely impressive aircraft + the carrier
Quite easy to get to from midtown
Key negative
Expensive with top ups required for the highlights
No decent-led tour
Suitability
Suitable for all ages. Most, but not all, of the museum is fully accessible by wheelchair.
