Luna Park in Coney Island

1000 Surf Avenue, Coney Island, New York

Description

Luna Park is an amusement park in Coney Island, next to the shoreline in southern Brooklyn. It was built on the ground of the former Astroland amusement park and named after the original 1903 Luna Park. There are over 30 rides, attractions and games including the famous thrill-inducing Cyclone and Thunderbolt rollercoasters. There are also some 'Moderate Thrill' and some family friendly rides. The Extraordinary Wristbands provide unlimited access to Luna Park in Coney Island rides for 4h and include 1 ride on the Sling Shot (for those who meet the height requirements). Alternatively, there is a pay-per-ride pricing scheme as well.

Access & Transport

The park is by Coney Island Beach and can be reached by public transport at 'West 8 Street-New York Aquarium' station (F, Q) and Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station (D, F, N, Q)

Instructions & Recommendations

Check the actual opening hours here: http://lunaparknyc.com/plan/park-hours/ It is recommended to buy wristbands online ahead of time. For the Extraordinary Wristbands, customers should arrive at least 3h before the scheduled closing time.

Meta review

Very average online reviews for this well-known amusement park which, though it is quite recent, is regularly (mistakenly) described as old - which suggest a lack of maintenance. Clearly, visitors stress they are some excellent rides and queuing time is not always an issue, but pricing is excessive (whether on a per ride basis or for the unlimited wristband) and staff is regularly described as being unfriendly. As for the area, some people enjoy the beach whereas others do not feel safe in the neighbourhood.

Environmental & Social

No environmental and social data available from the operator. Amusement parks consume a significant amount of electricity.

Conclusion

A worthwhile option for families looking for rides not involving a lengthy trip out of New York City and/or some time by the beach, but it is not a cheap day out. Probably better suited for residents or those who feel they need a break from Manhattan skyscrapers, shops and museums.
