Prospect Park, Brooklyn

Prospect Park West, Brooklyn, New York

Description

Prospect Park is a 213ha urban park created around 1870 when the (then) city of Brooklyn was the third largest in the country after New York and Philadelphia. The designers wanted to impart a pastoral atmosphere with changing perspectives and views over Prospect Lake from Lookout Hill roughly divided into three sections: wooded, open and waterside. Nowadays, highlights include the Long Meadow (the longest stretch of unbroken meadow in any U.S. urban park), the Boathouse, the Litchfield Villa, Prospect Park Bandshell (hosts free outdoor concerts in summertime) and Prospect Lake. There are also sport facilities and a zoo whilst the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Brooklyn Museum are adjacent.

Access & Transport

The park is located roughly in the center of the borough of Brooklyn. By car from Manhattan, take either the Prospect Expressway or Manhattan Bridge / Flatbush Ave. By train/metro, there are several options, clockwise from the north: Grand Army Plaza (2, 3, 4), Eastern Parkway-Brooklyn Museum (2, 3, 4), Botanic Garden (S), Prospect (2, 5), Parkside Ave (Q) and Fort Hamilton parkway (F, G)

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this park with a visit of the Brooklyn Museum and/or the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

Meta review

Online reviewers are positively surprised by how large the park is with plenty of space to play, have family picnics but also run (or cycle). Probably not a 'destination' according to many but definitely a good place to take a break after visiting Brooklyn - and visually much more enjoyable than rows after rows of buildings. Opinions about maintenance and prettiness of the landscape are mixed and seem to partially depend on the seasons (not very inviting in the winter).

Environmental & Social

Green activity and positive impact on living environment for residents

Conclusion

A visit to Prospect Park is recommended for residents or repeat travellers who have experienced a lot of the main city's attractions and are looking for a relaxing outdoor spot. Also a good complement to the other attractions next to it (museum, zoo, botanical garden)
