September 11 Memorial & Museum (9/11)

180 Greenwich Street, New York, New York

Description

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum commemorates and documents the 9/11 terrorist attacks of 2001 that killed nearly 3,000 people when 2 jets were crashed into the 2 World Trade Center towers that collapsed afterwards. It was designed by Michael Arad of Handel Architects with two square reflecting pools in the center marking where the Twin Towers stood. The museum is 20m below ground, has a deconstructivist design and contains images, video recordings and artifacts from the attack and towers.

Access & Transport

The site is at 180 Greenwich Street with West St framing it on the western side It is served by the WTC Cortland underground station (1), World Trade Center (E), Cortland St (N, R, W) and Fulton St (4, 5). Info on accessibility: https://www.911memorial.org/visit/about/accessibility

Instructions & Recommendations

It is necessary to book online tickets ahead of time (even for children under 7yrs old). Last admission to the museum is 90mins before closing

Meta review

The site has become a must-visit for travellers to NYC and most visitors think the complex does an excellent job of paying respect to the victims and those left behind. Parents state that, though emotionally harrowing, they feel their children really learned something (remember - time flies and many people were not born when the terrorist event took place). The main drawbacks are the unfriendly security staff, the repetitive nature of some of the museum content, sporadic comments about high prices, and the crowds (many online recommendations to book online to avoid the queues at the entrance)

Environmental & Social

Quite a lot of construction material (resources intensive) + electricity for the museum. Blends educational and memorial aspects

Conclusion

The memorial is unambiguously an important stop for travellers to the city, but we are less convinced by the museum - there is a clear need for one, but we think it should have touched on some of the impact the event has had outside of the USA (where destruction has been manyfold that of the WTC) and we can't get our head around the pricing that keep increasing (does every investment need to be recouped in $?)
