The Frick Collection, NYC

945 Madison Avenue, New York, New York

Description

The Frick Collection comprises mostly Old Master paintings and European decorative arts (e.g. enamels and rugs) and furniture. It is normally housed in a mansion from the early 20th century (the Henry Clay Frick House) but due to extensive renovations and upgrades, its current home (the Frick Madison) is 5 blocks away.

Access & Transport

Current address: 945 Madison Avenue at 75th Street. It is a 3mins walk to '77 St' station (4, 6) and there are buses on Madison Av and Fifth Ave. FYI: the historic address is 1 East 70th Street

Instructions & Recommendations

*** The temporary Madison venue is scheduled to close early march 2024 and the historical one should reopen by end 2024 *** Children under age 10 are not admitted. Advance timed tickets are strongly recommended

Meta review

One of the best rated 'smaller' museums that often feature on travel guides shortlist of cultural activities and, even putting aside fake reviews, online reviews are very positive as well. Many visitors lament not being able to see the painting in the mansion "where they belong", but a fair percentage does still enjoy being able to appreciate the artwork in a new way. There are 3 practical drawbacks regularly brought up: lack of notes/information for many items, having to download an app to listen on a smartphone (so don't forget your headphones), and not being allowed to take photographs.

Environmental & Social

Marginally negative from an environmental standpoint but the ongoing renovation are expected to result in a LEED certification. Helps spread the arts and preserve the city's architectural heritage.

Conclusion

The Frick seems to have managed its temporary relocation quite well. Most of the artwork is the same and the new display style brings the focus on each piece rather than their interaction with their immediate environment and how they complement with other decorative features. An excellent museum for lovers of 'classic' art.
