Description
The High Line is a 2.3km (1.4mile) elevated urban 'trail' designed by repurposing a former rail spur on Manhattan West side, between Gansevoort St. and 34th St. It was inspired by the Coulée verte René-Dumont in Paris. The 'park' draws large numbers of tourists and has been instrumental in revitalizing the Chelsea neighbourhood.
Access & Transport
The '34 Street-Hudson Yards' subway station (7) provides immediate access at the northern end and '14 St / 8 Av' (A, C, E, L) is less than 10mins' walk from the southern one near The Whitney. Elevator status for those with mobility issues: https://www.thehighline.org/elevator-status/
Instructions & Recommendations
Free docent-led public tours are offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year and on Tuesday as well from May to Oct.
Environmental & Social
Repurposing of existing infrastructure with positive impact on surrounding neighbourhoods
Conclusion
Our conclusion might raise some eyebrows but... what is the fuss exactly about? Ok, good on repurposing, but there are frankly many more interesting walks to take in NYC. Calling it a park is really a misnomer and this is no escape from the city, unlike the Paris 'Coulee Verte'. One more example of how magazines and influencers distort public perception. Popularity breeds popularity.
Key positive
Positive economic impact on surrounding community
Key negative
Short and not much to see
Suitability
Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility via elevators
