The Metropolitan Museum of Art

1000 5th Avenue, New York, New York

Description

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (the "Met") collection consists of works and artefacts spanning a period from classical antiquity and ancien Egypt all the way to modern art. Its main venue is located in Manhattan, New York (it has a second location called The Cloisters in Upper Manhattan) and it is one of the largest and most visited art museums in the world. The building expanded manyfold over time but well-known architectural features such as the Fifth Avenue façade, the Great Hall, and Grand Stairway were designed in Beaux-Arts style. Highlights and masterpieces are too numerous to list but some of the favourite sections include Greek and Roman Art, Islamic Art, European Paintings, Asian Art, Oceanic Art and Sub-Saharan African Art. There are also musical instruments, antique weapons and armours.

Access & Transport

The museum is in Upper West Side, just off 5th Avenue and technically within Central Park. Buses M1, M2, M3 and M4 stop in front of the building that also has parking. The 86th Street station (4, 5, 6) is 800m away / 10mins walk. Accessible entrances are located at Fifth Avenue and 81st Street and through the parking garage at Fifth Avenue and 80th Street. Instructions & Recommendations

All admission tickets include exhibitions and same-day entry to both Met locations.

Meta review

Another museum that needs no introduction and on every travel guide short list. Not the best rated by online reviewers necessarily but the comments belie that it is held to a different standard altogether and this is the favourite NYC institution of many visitors. There are consistent comments there is so much to see, with so many cultures and so many famous artists exhibited, that it can't all be 'tackled' in one go (would need 2 or 3 visits) and one needs to plan a route ahead of time. The main recurring negative comment is probably around pricing which is too high to allow for repeat visits for most budgets. Tip: buy tickets online to avoid crowds.

Environmental & Social

Some environment impact to run the museum (same amount of electricity as 10,000 homes). Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

Highly recommend visit for everybody, not just fans of culture and art - there really is something for everybody and the venue itself is impressive. We only wish pricing was lower with an option for multi-visit within one week - do not get us wrong, value is fair considering the content quality and extensiveness; our comment relates to affordability.
