Description
The Morgan Library & Museum is a museum and research library housed in a residence purchased by banker J. P. Morgan in the late 19th century. The collection comprised several extremely rare items among which are several illuminated manuscripts (e.g. the Morgan Bible), author's original manuscripts (e.g. from Walter Scott and Balzac), three Gutenberg Bibles, musical manuscripts from artists such as Beethoven and Verdi and many prints, drawings, and paintings from European Renaissance artists (and some from later periods). The interior with its polychrome rotunda and mosaics on the walls is also richly decorated and an attraction unto itself.
Access & Transport
Address: 225 Madison Avenue at 36th Street. By bus: M2, M3, M4, Q32 to 36th Street The closest subway / PATH stations are 33 St (4, 6), Grand Central (4, 5, 6, 7) and 42 St (B, D, F, Q)
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this museum with a visit up the Empire State Building and the New York Public Library (a different experience) & Bryant Park
Environmental & Social
Reasonable environmental footprint (electricity mostly) and helps preserve a global artistic heritage.
Conclusion
Book lovers should not miss the Morgan Library and we would more broadly recommend it to any traveller (or resident) with cultural inclinations. The content is of the first order, shame pricing is so high.
