Whitney Museum of American Art - by Management
Description
The Whitney Museum of American Art (a.k.a. The Whitney) houses a collection of 20th and 21st century American art across various media such as paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and photographs. Its new building (since 2015) was designed by Renzo Piano. The museum also holds temporary exhibitions for younger and lesser-known artists.
Access & Transport
The museum is located at 99 Gansevoort Street in Manhattan's Meatpacking District, next to West St and the Hudson River Greenway. The M11 and M12 buses stop on Hudson St and '14 St / 8 Av' station (A, C, E, L) is only 500m away. Info on accessibility: https://whitney.org/visit/access
Instructions & Recommendations
Visitors are strongly encouraged to reserve timed-entry tickets in advance. We suggest combining a visit there with Chelsea Market, Little Island and/or a walk along The High Line urban elevated green corridor.
Environmental & Social
The building has a LEED Gold rating thanks to its use of natural light, LED lighting, cogen plant, green roof, etc. Supports the arts, including new and lesser-known artists through exhibitions
Conclusion
The Whitney is an impressive contemporary art museum but not one that will make your change your mind about that type of art. Not a priority for first time visitors to the city, considering the number of top-tier art venues.
