Yankee Stadium Tour

1 East 161 Street, Concourse, New York

Description

The Yankee Stadium is the home field for Major League Baseball's New York Yankees and Major League Soccer's New York City FC. It replaced the original stadium in 2009 (now a public park called Heritage Field) and is also used for other sporting events and concerts. The Yankees are one of the MLB's most famous teams, having won 27 World Series championships (the title given at the end of the playoffs each season). Some players such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio are also strongly associated with the franchise. The MLB runs various tours of the Stadium, including the 'Classic Tour' reviewed here that takes visitors around the building, arena and the various baseball memorabilia (incl. the Monument Park open air museum). They last approx. 60 minutes and start every 20mins between 9h00 and 16h40 though at the time of this review they seem to only occur with starts between 10h00 and 14h00.

Access & Transport

Enter through the Hard Rock Cafe adjacent to Gate 6 (corner of 161st St. and River Ave.) The stadium has its own metro station: 161 St - Yankee Stadium (B, D, 4) and bus stops (Bx6, Bx13). Plenty of parking space as well.

Instructions & Recommendations

Tours are only available for sale online and must be purchased in advance. If a tour date and/or time is cancelled, it will be refunded Customers should arrive 15 minutes prior to designated start time

Meta review

Mixed online comments for the Classic Tour because many visitors expected to have access to the dugout and locker rooms, which is not the case, so there are suggestions to buy the cheapest ticket for a game and enjoy the stadium and museum then. The majority of reviewers seems happy with the excellent views and photo opportunities from the press box, monument park, and the guides running them through some of the team's history. The museum has some good content but isn't very large considering the team's pedigree.

Environmental & Social

Stadiums are energy intensive but the team is a signatory of the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework. Use of LED lighting + passive cooling + offsets greenhouse gas emissions. Still energy intensive but clearly some efforts made. More info here: https://www.mlb.com/yankees/ballpark/information/sustainability-initiatives

Conclusion

Strange formula in our opinion because those unacquainted with the sport or team will prioritize watching a game over touring the stadium and the team fans will often be let down by the curtailed experience of the Classic Tour. Also, pricing is on the high side for what it is.
