Asian Arts Museum of Nice

405 Promenade des Anglais, Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

The Asian Arts Museum of Nice houses artefacts and work of arts across 5 thematic collections: China, Japan, India, Southeast Asia, and Buddhism. The building was designed by architect Kenzo Tange.

Access & Transport

Address: 405 Promenade des Anglais The museum is located within the Phoenix Park, on the southwest side of the city. The Phoenix Park complex is across the highway from the Nice Airport and is served by the tram at "Parc Phoenix" station on the L2 and buses A and 09. Those coming by car can use the Parking Indigo Nice Arénas.

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity can easily be combined with the Phoenix Park (a zoo and botanical garden).

Meta review

Most visitors seem to be positively surprised by the museum; they acknowledge that the collection is small and only superficially covers Asian Arts but they enjoy the quality of the items, the way they are displayed as well as the small gift shop. The star for many though, is the modern marble building that seems to float on the lake and has perfect indoor spaces and lighting. There are recurring comments that, on its own, the museum may not be worth the trip but when combined with the Phoenix Park, it makes for a good half-day of activities.

Environmental & Social

Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Helps spread culture and the arts

Conclusion

The museum is of good quality and, being free, provides excellent value. The issue is that it seeks to tackle such a large scope that it only gives visitors a glimpse of various arts and cultures which, in our opinion, makes it an appealing proposition for regional residents but not international travellers who may have already visited museums with much larger collections on the topic. That being said, for fans of Asian art, it may be worth their time purely on aesthetic grounds.
