Marc Chagall Museum, Nice

Avenue Docteur Ménard, Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

The Marc Chagall Museum in Nice is dedicated to the Russian artist who spent the last decades of his life living in the region. The collection is centred around his twelve-painting series about the Genesys and the Exodus. With over 400 paintings, gouaches and drawings, the museum owns one of the largest public collections of Chagall's works.

Access & Transport

Address: Avenue du Docteur Ménard The museum is 800m north of the train station and 2km from Place Massena. The "Musée Chagall" bus stop (05) is a stone throw away.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Cimiez neighbourhood that includes the Regina hotel, the Cimiez Monastery and garden, the Matisse Museum, and some Roman ruins.

Meta review

Opinions about the museums are overall very favourable with many reviewers already being fans of the artist, or becoming one. Visitors enjoy the riot of colours of the paintings and stained-glass windows, the decent amount of English translation, and the calm and relaxing setting of the building with a pleasant little café. The main complaint relates to the limited size of the collection (that seems to fluctuate).

Environmental & Social

Minor environmental impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Helps spread culture and the arts

Conclusion

The Marc Chagall Museum brings together a decent-size and luminous collection of the artist's works in a tranquil setting. We highly recommend the museum to anybody looking for a cultural activity, even to those unfamiliar with Chagall.
