Description

The Matisse Museum in Nice exhibits one of the world's largest collections of Henri Matisse works, spanning its early artistic beginning up to his latest productions. There are close to 70 paintings and gouaches, over 230 drawings, 200 prints as well as some photos, sculptures and books he illustrated. Matisse lived in Nice between 1917 and 1954 and he donated many of the pieces himself. The museum is housed in the 17th century Villa des Arènes.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Cimiez Monastery, a short walk away.

Meta review

Online reviews are quite mixed; many visitors were disappointed by what they felt was the small number of works from Matisse himself, suspecting many were being loaned out. The attitude of staff, unstructured layout, and lack of English translation are also repeatedly pointed out. The highlights for most are the drive past many 19th century villas on the way to the museum and the ruins surrounding the property.

Environmental & Social

Minor environmental impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Spreads culture and the arts and preserves the city's architectural heritage.

Conclusion

The Matisse Museum is located in a visit-worthy neighbourhood dotted with several impressive villas and the Cimiez Monastery next door. If you are already in the area or a fan of the artist, then it is worth checking out, if not we think there are several better museums in the city.
