Promenade des Anglais

Promenade des Anglais, Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

La Promenade des Anglais in Nice stretches for 7km alongside the Mediterranean coast, all the way to the airport. The name originates from the very beginning of the coastal path that was popular with the English aristocracy who had been wintering in the city since the late 18th century. It was created in 1820 and then extended and enlarged several times until the end of the 19th century; commercial development ensued with expensive hotels and casinos taking the place of villas. With the development of automobiles, the pedestrian area has been widened to include what is now a multi-lane road.

Access & Transport

Several bus services (12, 23, 32) ply the length of the promenade and Line 2 of the tram runs in parallel between "Centre Universitaire Méditerranéen" and "Carras" at the western end of the stretch of beaches.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a walk on the promenade with some time at the beach. Attractions along the way include the Villa Massena Museum, the Fine Arts Museum, The Phoenix Park, and the Asian Arts Museum.

Meta review

The Promenade is, alongside the Vieux-Nice neighbourhood, the most emblematic attraction of the city. Visitors generally seem to be enjoying a stroll there, watching the sun glistening over the azure waters of the Mediterranean. It is equally popular with cyclists and runners who have dedicated lanes as well as inline skaters. There are some reviewers however for whom it lacks interest compared to other parts of the city and who are mostly bothered by the car traffic and related noise.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally and socially neutral (the stretch has been commercially orientated for over 150years).

Conclusion

The Promenade des Anglais makes for an enjoyable walk if what you are looking for is to be by the sea but, in our view, there is nothing really spectacular about it besides its length and the amount of car traffic that goes by. Given it is so easy to get to it, we suggest you spend 20mins on it and see how you enjoy it.
