Sainte-Réparate Cathedral, Nice

3 Place Rossetti, Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

The Sainte-Réparate Cathedral was built in the historical old town of Nice (the "Vieux Nice") in the second half of the 17th century. It houses relics of saint Réparate that were brought to the city in 1078 and were previously housed in the former cathedral of the city (Sainte-Marie du château de Nice) on Castle Hill. The Baroque design follows that of Ste-Suzanne in Rome: a latin cross oriented towards the East. The interior includes 10 chapels and three musical organs.

Access & Transport

Address: 3 Place Rossetti in the centre Vieux Nice neighbourhood The 'Opéra - Vieille Ville' and 'Cathédrale - Vieille Ville' tram stops (Line 1) provide best access from the western side and the Garibaldi / Le Château stop (L2) from the North By car, Quai des États-Unis and Bd Jean Jaurès are the most effective access roads to the Vieux Nice

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit of the Cathedral with an exploration of the Vieux Nice neighbourhood, including the Cours Saleya market. Castle Hill Park is also nearby.

Meta review

Online reviews are quite consistent: the exterior is nice but relatively unassuming so that the beautifully decorated interior comes as a surprise. The sense coming of the comments though is that it is worth a quick visit for those in the neighbourhood but not a special trip.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. The building is part of the city's architectural and cultural heritage and donations contribute to its upkeep.

Conclusion

The Cathedral stands out for its beautifully decorated interior but isn't spectacular enough to wow tourists without much inclination for religious art - if that is your case, then our recommendation is to take a look if you are in the area but don't plan your itinerary around it.

Key positive

Gorgeous gilded sculptures of the high altar

Very centrally located

Key negative

The exterior is a little underwhelming for a cathedral

Suitability

No religious denomination restrictions. The cathedral is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
