St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral

Avenue Nicolas II, Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral is an orthodox church located at the edge of Nice city centre. It was built for the large and expanding Russian community in the city at the turn of the 20th century, after the Saint Nicolas and Sainte Alexandra church had become too small. It was designed by architect Mikhaïl Préobrajenski and inaugurated in 1912. After some legal wrangling, the ownership of the church was formally transferred to the Russian Federation in 2011 and an extensive renovation followed in 2013-15.

Address: Avenue Nicolas II The Cathedral is next to the bus stops "Tzaréwitch / Gambetta" (64, 71, 75) and "Tzaréwitch / Gambetta" (8, 11, 23, 57)

Instructions & Recommendations

Unless you are coming for the celebration of the sacrament, it is best to avoid the 12h00-14h00 timing since this is when services are generally scheduled, and tourist visits are not permitted during them.

The church gets extremely well rated in online reviews. Visitors enjoy the very distinctive and impressive exterior as well as the beautiful icons inside. The only regrets regularly expressed are that photography is not allowed indoors and there is no board or leaflet to provide information about the building.
