Description
The Kuchlbauer Brewery was founded in 1300 in the town of Abensberg, in Lower Bavaria. It specializes in wheat beer but is nowadays better known for the Kuchlbauer-Turm, a 34m high oddly shaped observation tower designed by Austrian architect Hundertwasser. Inside the tower are 4200 Weissbier (wheat beer) glasses and an exhibition of the brewing process but these are only accessible as part of the guided tour. Next to the brewery is the KunstHaus Abensberg, a museum dedicated to the works of Hundertwasser The activity reviewed here is the combined ticket which includes a 90mins guided tour of the brewery (Kuchlbauer's World of Beer) and the tower, access to the museum and a voucher for one beverage (0.5l) and one pretzel. The tours are conducted exclusively in German but English and Italian descriptions are available.
Access & Transport
Address: Brauerei Zum Kuchlbauer, Römerstraße 5–9, 93326 Abensberg Visitors to Kuchlbauer’s World of Beer can park for free directly next to the brewery. Abensberg is 95km north of Munich on the A9/A93, 35km southwest of Regensburg on the B16 and 115km southeast of Nuremberg on the A9 / exit 59-Denkendorf / B299. The town is also on the train line between Ingolstadt and Regensburg, it is only a 5mins walk from the station to the brewery. Wheelchair users only have access to limited parts of the complex but can use the lift to the viewing terrace in the tower and then participate in the beer tasting.
Instructions & Recommendations
Note that the tours are scheduled at 11h, 13h, 15h and the museum can be visited before or after, which gives a little flexibility in terms of scheduling.
Environmental & Social
No data available so we deem this activity environmentally neutral. Tourism brings a modest amount of economic activity to the town.
Conclusion
Kuchlbauer runs a brewery tour with a difference. If you are in central Bavaria looking for something original to visit and are not allergic to beer, then this attraction is worth considering. If beer is not your thing and you are in the area, it is still worth a detour for the buildings and the museum.
