Passau "Three Rivers" boat tour

Description

The town of Passau is nicknamed the "City of Three Rivers" (Dreiflüssestadt) and there are several cruise operators taking tourists to see the confluence of the three rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz, with their different colours. This is also the opportunity to enjoy the main city monuments such as Oberhaus Castle, St Stephan's Cathedral and the Monastery of Maria Hilf from a distinct perspective. This review is for the 45mins sightseeing cruise run by Donauschifffahrt.

Access & Transport

Departure is at Dock A11, Fritz-Schäffer-Promenade in Passau The “Am Schanzl”, “Römerplatz” and "Schanzlbrücke” parkings are a 5-10 mins walk away from the docks. The town is 170km northeast of Munich (A94 / B12 / A3), 230km southeast of Nuremberg (A3) and 80km northwest of Linz in Austria (B130). By train, Linz is 1h away on the ICE, Nuremberg 2h, Regensburg 1h whilst Munich is 2h15 away on the regional service RE3. The train station is a 20mins walk from the dock.

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure you allocate some time to visit the town, in particular St Stephan's Cathedral.

Meta review

Reviews for this cruise are good but not exceptional. The boat is described as being comfortable and the organisation is good but many travellers were disappointed by the absence of comments in English (only German). There are positive comments about the view of town and the cathedral from the Inn river, however it seems the best place to see the distinct colours of the 3 rivers merging isn't from the boat but rather from the top of the hill where Veste Oberhaus fortress is located.

Environmental & Social

Boats run on fossil fuels. Neutral from a social perspective.

Conclusion

The Three River Cruise is an enjoyable way to discover Passau's main architectural highlights and spend some time on the water. However, your objective should not be focused on experiencing the confluence because this is a bit of a non-event and the best views are actually from vantage points higher up.
