Description
Nuremberg is the 2nd largest city in Bavaria and the unofficial capital of the region of Franconia. It has a long history dating back to at least the 11th century, with mentions of the Imperial Casle and its well-preserved old town makes it popular with tourists. Key attractions include its pedestrian streets framed by picturesque timbered houses, the Imperial Castle, St Lorenz Church, Schöner Brunnen and Frauenkirche, Hallertorbrücke (famous bridge over the Pegnitz river), and Albert Dürer House (the home of the Nuremberg-born Rennaissance artist).
Access & Transport
Nuremberg is 70mins away from Munich on the ICE train services, 2h10mins from Stuttgart and 2h05mins from Frankfurt. By car from Munich, it takes about 2h (175km) on the A9.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visit of the old town and its monuments with the zoological garden and the Documentation Centre Nazi Party Rally Grounds (in the eastern/south-eastern outskirts of the city).
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Tourism helps preserve the city's architectural heritage
Conclusion
The Nuremberg Altstadt is the city's main touristic draw and, whilst it may not be the most spectacular in the country, it is one of the cultural centers of Bavaria's and has several interesting monuments to keep visitors' busy for at least a full day. Overnight stays will allow travellers to explore other attractions just outside the city.
