Nuremberg Zoo

30 Am Tiergarten, Nürnberg, Bayern

Description

Nuremberg Zoo (Tiergarten Nürnberg) is one of Europe's largest zoos. It is spread over 67ha in the Nuremberg Reichswald ("imperial forest") and keeps around 300 animal species including Siberian tigers, Asiatic lions, polar bears, rhinoceroses, zebras and wolves. There is also a dolphin lagoon where shows are held and scheduled feeding times for lions, seals, otters and penguins.

Access & Transport

The zoological garden is 7km east of Nuremberg city center. It can easily be accessed by bus (E5 / 45) or tram (5). The S-bahn station of Nürnberg-Mögeldorf (S1) is 1.2km away.

Instructions & Recommendations

This attraction is geographically near the Documentation Centre Nazi Party Rally Grounds (4km)

Meta review

Online reviews indicate that the zoo is good without being exceptional. The green and spacious environment and the several kids' playgrounds are positive aspects but there is no spectacular feature, expect possibly the dolphin show, and the enclosures could benefit from a better upkeep.

Environmental & Social

The zoo operates a rescue station for injured animals and has been designated an EU-conservation area. It also supports organisations that stand up for the protection of threatened species and, in the past, it has released eagle owls and Ural owls - both nearly extinct - into the wild. Nuremberg Zoo is one of Germany's best zoos and makes for a good variation in a city rich in cultural attractions, provided you are comfortable with the concept of animals being held in captivity.
