Description
The University of California, Berkeley ('Berkeley') was the first campus of the University of California (1868). It is located just north of Oakland, about 15km from San Francisco across the Bay and known for the quality of its faculty and research (Nobel Laureates, Fields Medallists, Turing Awards), athletic teams and political activism - notably the Free Speech Movement of the 1960s. The central campus occupies about 72ha and to its northwest is North Berkeley, a neighbourhood nicknamed the 'Gourmet Ghetto' thanks to its high-quality dining establishments such as 'Chez Panisse'. The core of the campus was designed in the Beaux-Arts Classical style, and include buildings such as the Greek Theatre, Doe Memorial Library, Wheeler Hall and the 94m high "Campanile' (Sather Tower).
Access & Transport
The older part of the campus is directly to the east of 'Downtown Berkeley' station with the red line heading to San Francisco and the Orange to Oakland, Fremont and San Jose. Bus C goes inside and P on the northern edge (Heart Av.)

Conclusion
UC Berkeley is one of California's most interesting campuses to visit, not just because it looks quietly inviting to academic pursuits (and others) but because of its historical significance and the role it played in the 1960's. Not a must but a good stop around Oakland or on the way to/from Sonoma or Napa.
