AlpspiX & Garmisch-Classic cablecars

AlpspiX - by Wolfgang Dunkel on Google

Description
The AlpspiX is a steel viewing platform with two curved free-floating arms providing visitors with dramatic views of the valley floor about 1000 meters below. It is attached 13m above the rock on the Osterfelderkopf, a 2057 m high secondary summit of the Alpspitze. It can be reached by hiking or by cable car with a "Garmisch Classic" ticket that enables customers to ride up on the Alpspitzbahn (the station is 20m below the viewing platform) and ride down to Hochalm on the Hochalmbahn (or hike down for ~45mins). From there it is an easy 20-30mins walk to reach the Kreuzeckbahn station and take the cable car back down.
Access & Transport
The cable car stations are 5km from the center of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and can easily be reached by car, bus or cogwheel train. The summer and ski mountain resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is 90km southwest of Munich in the Bavarian Alps and easily accessible on the A95/ B2 in about 1h30m. Regional trains RB6 and RB 60 also link Munich Central Station to the resort in 85mins and the buses to Garmisch-Classic are timed to coincide with the arrival of trains. How to get there link: https://zugspitze.de/parking One of the benefits of the cable car is to make the summit and views accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, including wheelchair users. Instructions & Recommendations
Best to check the weather ahead of time to avoid cloudy and rainy days. If you intend to hike at the summit, make sure to bring proper footwear and carry enough water.
Environmental & Social
The AlpspiX is not a heavy structure and the cable car main purpose is to bring skiers up the slopes in winter so this reuses existing infrastructure and the per capita energy consumption isn't very high, so we consider this activity environmentally neutral. We also think that it makes high mountain a little more accessible and hopefully make more tourists interested in outdoor activity and, ultimately, more respectful of their environment.
Conclusion
The entire Garmisch Classic circuit is certainly worth experiencing, the question is whether you need the cable car ride up (and/or down) which will most likely depend on the context of your visit (with younger children for instance) and level of fitness. We do note that the AlspiX itself is accessible without any fee, it is the cable car ride(s) that requires a ticket. If you are scarce on time you will also need to choose between this activity and going up Zugspitze, the highest peak in the area and in the country.
Key positive
Great views over the valley
Makes the mountain accessible to all
Key negative
Expensive
Suitability
Suitable to all ages and visitors with reduced mobility. Wheelchair users can go up to the platform and back down to the valley but won' be able to complete the full circuit since there is a hiking trail section between cable car #2 and #3
