Burghausen Castle

48 Burg, Burghausen, Bayern

Description

Burghausen Castle is located in the namesake town in the eastern part of Upper Bavaria. It was built in the mid-13th century as a residence for the dukes of Lower Bavaria and its fortifications were expanded during the 14th-15th centuries. It became a "border castle" after the Treaty of Teschen in 1779 and the structure was partially destroyed during the Napoleonic Wars. The main claim to fame of the Castle is to be the longest castle complex in the world: 1,051m. There is one inner and five outer courtyards, and the dominant architectural style is Gothic. Highlights include a Gothic church, a clock tower and the well-preserved defences. The Castle State Museum is housed in the Palas, the old ducal private rooms.

Access & Transport

The castle grounds are accessible to visitors with reduced mobility but not the State Castle Museum. More info here: https://www.burg-burghausen.de/englisch/tourist/mobility.htm

Meta review

The castle is seldom featured in travel magazines but, according to most visitors, it is worth a detour not just for its impressive scale but also its well-preserved defensive features. The emphasis on protecting gates means that moving from one courtyard too the other feels like changing castle. There are recurring comments though that despite some noteworthy structures such as the Aventinus House or the Clock Tower, there is little to see inside.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral and helps preserve the region's architectural and historical heritage

Conclusion

Burghausen Castle is an extremely impressive structure that dominates the town, but you will need to weigh that against its slightly isolated location and the "cost of opportunity" this represents to the rest of your itinerary. Logistics aside, it is worth visiting for its rich historical background and its sheer scale but it may disappoint those looking for finely furnished and decorated rooms.
