Description
Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site is located on the grounds of the factory complex turned prison that saw 200,000 prisoners of which over 40,000 died during WW2 from hunger, illness or murder. The Dachau camp actually grew to include over 100 sub-camps, mostly for forced labour, across southern Germany and Austria. The Memorial Site opened in 1965 and seeks to document and remember the acts that took place there under the Nazi rule and commemorate those that were subjected to them. There are guided tours available daily (4 €). They last 2h30 and depart at 11h00 and 13h00 (English) and 12h00 (German). Min. age for those is 13yrs old.
Access & Transport
The address is: 2a Pater Roth Str. in Dachau, 18km northwest of Munich city center. The easiest way to get there is with the S2 S-Bahn from Munich’s Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) until Dachau station and then take bus 726 towards “Saubachsiedlung” to the entrance of the Memorial Site (stop: “KZ-Gedenkstätte”) By car from Munich, take the A9 towards Nuremberg, A99 to the Feldmoching interchange followed by the A92 to the Oberschleißheim/Dachau exit and the B471 towards Dachau (exit Dachau-Ost). There is a parking at 73 Alte Römerstraße (€3.00 per car, no credit card) Comprehensive instructions can be found on the website: https://www.kz-gedenkstaette-dachau.de/en/your-visit/directions/
Instructions & Recommendations
We recommend parents read about the historical background and what they will see before heading there with their children and assess whether this attraction is suitable. Our sense is 13-14yrs old is the right age to get to grip with history. Taking the guided tour will allow visitors to get the most out of their visit.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Socially positive and important as a memorial, historical and educational site.
Conclusion
A visit to Dachau Concentration Camp isn't exactly the pleasantest of experience BUT it is an important one and anybody who has not visited any such camp in Germany, Austria or Poland should feel a moral obligation to take this opportunity whilst in Munich or the surrounding area.
