Herrenchiemsee New Palace - by Raffaella Campaci on Google
Description
Herrenchiemsee New Palace was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1878 on Herreninsel, an island in the middle of Chiemsee lake, in South-eastern Bavaria. It was designed by architect Georg von Dollmann in Neo-Baroque style and was heavily inspired by Versailles (both the main palace and the Grand Trianon), including the landscaped garden that includes a copy of the Latona fountain. More than half the castle was left unfinished by the time Ludwig died in 1886 and the palace was subsequently opened to the public and transferred to the state of Bavaria in 1923. Highlights include the Hall of Mirrors - not only a copy of Versailles's but with frescoes of Louis the XIV - the State staircase and the gardens.
Access & Transport
Boats to Herreninsel depart regularly from Prien am Chiemsee and Gstadt am Chiemsee. There are direct trains from Munich Central station to Prien (BRB RE5 - 56mins) and the pier is 1.5km / 20mins walk from the train station. By car, it is a 90km drive on the A8 motorway (exit 106). Paying parking is available at the pier. Instructions & Recommendations
A visit to Herrenchiemsee New Palace is currently only possible as part of a guided tour so best to book tickets online ahead of time. This doesn't apply to the King Ludwig II Museum in the New Palace.
Environmental & Social
We have little data on the energy consumption required to operate the palace, but the gardens are environmentally friendly. The activity preserves the country's cultural and architectural heritage and employs directly a large number of people (building restauration and maintenance, gardeners, etc.)
Conclusion
If there was only one, that might be Herrenchiemsee New Palace. We refer, of course, to the palaces commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The style is much more classical, but the footprint of the complex is extravagant and the interiors are some of the most lavishly decorated one can witness in Europe. We would strongly suggest to make a day of it, spending some time in the surrounding parks and visiting both the King Ludwig II Museum and the Augustinian Monastery - count about 5h in total.
Key positive
Beautiful gardens
Some unforgettable rooms such as the Hall of Mirrors
Key negative
Time consuming with ferry crossing + walk from pier to palace
Suitability
The boats can accommodate wheelchair users and the New Palace is also accessible for visitors with reduced mobility.
