Kramersptiz loop hike

Maximilianshöhe, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bayern

Description

The Kramersptiz loop hike takes place in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district of the Ammergau Alps, in Southern Germany. It offers hikers great views over the Loisach valley, including the Eibsee, the Walchensee and the Kochelsee. The 17km trail has a cumulative ascent of about 1,300m, with Kramerspitz culminating at 1985m above sea level, for an estimated completion time of 7-8h. The trail is steep and technical in some sections, this added to the length and D+/- means a good fitness level and some hiking experience are required. The general recommandation is to tackle the loop counter-clockwise.

Access & Transport

The starting point is the Maximilianshöhe car park, a 2mins drive northwest from Garmisch-Partenkirchen (or a 5-10mins walk). The trailhead is indicated. The summer and ski mountain resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is 90km southwest of Munich in the Bavarian Alps and easily accessible on the A95/ B2 in about 1h30m. Regional trains RB6 and RB 60 also link Munich Central Station to the resort in 85mins.

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure to bring proper footwear, some snacks (and possibly a picnic), plenty of water, sun protection and rain/wind coat depending on the weather forecast. Cloudy doesn't mean the UVs won't get to you and the weather changes quickly in the high mountains.

Meta review

Online reviews from hikers for this loop are almost unanimously excellent. They acknowledge that it is physically demanding and enjoy the stunning views, uncrowded trails as well as the bar at Stepberg-Alm! There are recurring suggestions to bring walking sticks for some of the downhill sections.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity. Socially neutral

Conclusion

The Kramerspitz isn't the highest peak in the area and is much less commercialized than the Zugspitze to the south of GP, but the loop has the benefit of not being commercialized (which outdoor lovers will appreciate) and reward their effort with some of the best views in the Bavarian Alps.
