Partnach Gorge

Wildenauer Straße, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bayern

Description

The Partnach Gorge (Partnachklamm) is a natural gorge created by the Partnach river in the Reintal valley near the south German town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the Bavarian Alps of Southern Germany. It is 700m in length and 80m deep in place. Notable structures along the path include a 250m tunnel carved through the rock and an iron bridge 68m high above the river.

Access & Transport

The gorge is 3km south of Garmisch-Partenkirchen so walking is easy enough - head towards the Skistadion via Stiefelfeldfussweg and then continue for 15-20mins. The summer and ski mountain resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is 90km southwest of Munich in the Bavarian Alps and easily accessible on the A95/ B2 in about 1h30m. Regional trains RB6 and RB 60 also link Munich Central Station to the resort in 85mins. How to get there link: https://www.partnachklamm.de/en/getting-there

Instructions & Recommendations

There is no online ticket sale, only at the ticket office The path is unsuitable for wheelchairs, strollers are not allowed and last-minute closures are sometimes necessary for safety reasons. It is best to wear shoes with rubber soles as the path can be slippery.

Meta review

The walk along the gorges is sometimes featured in travel blogs but isn't very famous overseas. Online reviews are however very consistent as there is no real downside besides the slightly slippery ground that requires proper footwear and the tunnel section that requires tall persons to lower their head. Visitors enjoy the slightly vertiginous sections and the raging torrent and are surprised by how loud it can be.

Environmental & Social

Green activity. Brings some revenues to the local community.

Conclusion

We highly recommend travellers in the Garmisch-P. area to experience the Partnach Gorge. It is close to the center of town and therefore doesn't require a significant time investment, rewarding visitors with the raw beauty of nature, be it winter of summer.
