Pilgrimage Church of Wies

Description

The Pilgrimage Church of Wies (Wieskirche) is located in south-western Bavaria and known for its frescoes and stuccowork in rococo style as well as its oval structure. It was built between 1745-1754 on the site where a miracle was said to have taken place in 1738 (the claim is that tears were seen on a dilapidated wooden figure of the Scourged Saviour).

Access & Transport

Address: Wies 12, 86989 Steingaden It is possible to get by train to Peiting from Munich in 75mins (RB6 and transfer to BRB RB67 in Weilheim in Oberbayern). It is another 20km to Wieskirche from where there seems to be bus services. By car, it is a 100km / 1h45 drive from Munich on the A95 / B472 at exit 9 and then head to Murnau am Staffelsee followed by Wildsteig. The church is accessible to visitor with disabilities from the south entrance, detail here: https://www.wieskirche.de/en/handicap.html

Instructions & Recommendations

No visits are allowed during the church services: https://www.wieskirche.de/en/visit-times.html If you have a car, the Linderhof Palace is 40mins away (35km)

Meta review

Despite its UNESCO listing, the church isn't very well known overseas; it does however get good online reviews. Visitors highlight the quality of the frescoes and the ability to clearly see the building from every angle as it stands alone in a middle of a field. That being said, there are many comments that there is little to see and admire beyond the fresco so that it may not warrant a very long detour, but is clearly worthwhile when driving through the area.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Part of the region's architectural and artistic heritage.

Conclusion

Unless you are a pilgrim or deeply interested in religious art, Wieskirche is interesting but not sufficiently so to justify a significant detour. As such, it is best experienced as part of a regional road trip, possibly on the way from Munich to Linderhof Palace.
