Description
Regensburg is a city in Eastern Bavaria popular with travellers for its well-preserved medieval centre (a UNESCO WHS). It developed at the confluence of the Danube, Regen and Naab rivers during Roman times and was the capital of Bavaria between the 6th and 13th centuries. The city adopted the Protestant Reformation in 1542 but several catholic abbeys remained and it was the permanent seat of the Imperial Diet of the Holy Roman Empire between 1663 and 1806. The main sights include St Peter's church (the German Gothic cathedral built between 1275 and 1634), the 12th century stone bridge, the abbey church of St. Emmeram (now called Schloss Thurn und Taxis) and the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte museum.
Access & Transport
The city is 120km northeast of Munich on the A9/A93 and 105km southeast of Nuremberg on the A3. It is linked to those cities by train in 1h40mins and 1h50mins respectively.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visit of the city with the Walhalla memorial, only 12km away.
Environmental & Social
The main activities in the city have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy
Conclusion
Regensburg is a visit-worthy destination with several sights and attractions in a compact area. We would recommend it to travellers within a 2h radius as part of a regional itinerary or day trip from either Nuremberg or Munich
